Megalania, the largest lizard that ever lived, supposedly went extinct 40,000 years ago. But did it?
Megalania (great roamer) is a giant extinct monitor lizard that supposedly died out 40,000 years ago. But sightings of the lizard continue to come in from Australia and New Guinea. It has been reported many times in the past thirty years. In 1979, herpatologist Frank Gordon saw a lizard that was over 30 feet long. A farmer spotted a 25 foot long lizard walking along one of his fields.
There have also been strange and unsolved disappearances of people accompanied by animal footprints. A Queensland farmer found bones of Megalaniawhich only date back 300 years. Most scientists believe the reports of living Megalania are false. They point out that the sightings only began after the species was described in scientific journals thirty years ago. Others suggest that lizards the size of Megalania would be unable to evolve and live today because of the lack of megafauna in their present environment. I also believe that some of the sightings are misidentified crocodiles and Komodo dragons.
The Megalania is most closely related to the Komodo. It was probably about 15 feet long and weighed about 730 pounds, and was the largest lizard that ever lived. Megalania had venom glands along its jawline. It could see over long distances but it was better at seeing moving objects, and used its claws for ripping open the flesh of carcasses.
When Aborigines arrived in Australia 40,000 to 125,000 years ago, they encountered Megalania. It was probably intelligent, as monitor lizards tend to be.
After you take out hoaxes, hysteria, lack of large prey and misidentified animals, I think there is a 60% chance that there are some living Megalania in Australia and New Guinea. In fact, they may have evolved into a larger animal. I believe that a large, comprehensive search by open minded scientists may turn up some interesting results.

THE MONSTER OF MONTEREY:
Although it is believed to have gone extinct over 60 million years ago, some believe the plesiosaur — a massive prehistoric marine reptile — still lives today, lurking far beneath the surface of the world’s deepest oceans. In 1925, the rotting carcass of the so-called Monster of Monterey — believed by many to be a plesiosaur — washed up on the shores of Moore’s Beach in Monterey Bay, California. Its neck is said to have been almost 20 feet long. While some biologists maintain that the remains were those of a basking shark, the evidence was inconclusive. Similar remains were snared by a Japanese fishing boat in 1977 in the waters off the coast of New Zealand. However, the crew dumped the foul smelling carcass overboard before scientific tests could be conducted.
PREHISTORIC PLESIOSAURS:
Today, skeletons of the carnivorous prehistoric plesiosaur found off the coast of England and Norway are on display in many natural history museums around the world. The massive reptile is estimated to have weighed as much as 25 tons and propelled itself through the water with four muscular flippers and a long tail. Its long, slender neck is similar to reported descriptions of the Loch Ness Monster. From its pointed beak to the tip of its tail, plesiosaurs are believed to have measured at least 15 feet.
DO WE REALLY KNOW?
While marine biologists have made tremendous strides toward revealing the secrets of the deep, unknown worlds remain locked away from human eyes at the bottom of the earth’s deepest oceans. Indeed, new species are being discovered daily. Who is to say what does or does not exist in those black depths?

Witches earn their power through violating a taboo and generally use it to harm others, so they are considered a sort of monster.
In animal form, a skin-walker is very fast and impossible to catch. Skin-walkers sometimes transform themselves into animals simply for the purpose of traversing great distances quickly. They may also transform in order to wreak havoc on others, as their identity will be hidden and they will be able to escape quickly if necessary. Both humans and animals can easily tell a skin-walker from a real animal, as the skin-walker is unable to move completely naturally in animal form.
A skin-walker typically wears the pelt of the animal he or she will transform into, usually with no other clothing. Because of their association with skin-walkers, wild animal hides are taboo in Navajo culture and rarely seen. A skin-walker can only be defeated if one can discover his or her human identity. This is possible if the skin-walker is tracked back to his or her home, or, in some stories, if a skin-walker is wounded and the same injury is later noted on a human.
